Xavier High School Reviews

Undeniable academic reputation and very selective admissions. It may even be harder to stay in than get in. It may agruably be the best Catholic high school for boys in the NYC area when weighing in the combination of discipline, academic rigor, and the respectability of award winning departments in music and art. They have national military distinction and over 50 sports and organizations. Their alumni include a US Supreme Court Justice, a New Jersey mayor, a legendary weather and television personality, and presidents of WNBC, the US Postal Service, and Annheiser Busch for straters. Tough act to compete with in the education department.

Graet academics with a lot of every decicated teachers, butyou have a few abusive ones which the administration protects liek the priests portect thier own.. abit unsettling. They are also not very Jesuit and honest. A bit ridgid nd a bit self priclaimed to be superios.. it is not., but is is a safe environment..dont expect more than that

One big happy family. Students are enthused about attending this school and has a well organized alumni support.

Xavier is unique but not perfect. The faculty is dedicated, the academics top shelf. The administration is disappointing since they do not put into practice their men for others motto. Honesty is punished. If you are not a good sneak, or perfect beware.

instead of just developing the mind or body alone, Xavier combines all possible learning together to create a man for others that any parent could be proud of. My son loved the school and would not be happier any place else. the tough workload is not for the faint of heart, but endows the ability upon the student to succed in any arena he chooses to enter. i love to hear it when other parents choose xavier for their children, and although there are those who fail to succeed there, it is only after repeated warnings that they are asked to leave. this creates a more positive atmosphere for those who absolutly try your hardest. although it is not meant for everyone, those who are willing to attempt the curriculum and expect no free ride turn out better then any other high school students in the city

An outstanding school academically, athletically, spiritually and socially. I highly recommend it to parents looking for an intellectual haven for their children. Parents, be forewarned, Xavier is not a place for slackers and shirkers. Academics are rigorous and discipline is strict.

I'm a graduating senior at Xavier High School in NYC. My four years at this institution have been the most rewarding years of my life. I made great friends, was taught by great teachers, and participated in wonderful activities. I will always treasure my Xavier experience as long as I live. The only thing I will not miss is the truly horrible cafeteria food - hopefully, they'll change back to the original vendor who knew how to please our palates.

I am a graduate of Xavier. The school was truly a life changing experience for me. At Xavier, I met and became life long friends with then boys of every ethnic and economic group who were there only because of having passed the same entrance exam. I learned that hard work, integrity and personal responsibility were the keys to success in all aspects of life. Xavier is truly an elite school not a school which merely produces elitists.

The best decision I ever made was to select xavier high school as one of my choices on my tachs examination form. I am currently a sophomore at xavier and I'm as happy as a lark with the school atmosphere: intellectual, scholarly, disciplined, orderly, athletic, moral and jesuit. I highly recommend the school to any and all of my peers - it's the best high school in nyc.

I am an alumnus of this school and received exceptional academic instruction while there. I went on to attend Cornell University and Harvard Graduate School. Xavier provides an excellent academic setting with above average teachers, numerous sports and other activities. In college and graduate school I truly felt prepared for all academic challenges. This is one of the best high schools in NYC!

I'm currently a sophomore at Xavier High School and I feel I am attending the greatest school in the world. While the discipline is exacting and the academics intense, the camaraderie of an all-boys school is fantastic. In addition, the team sports, JROTC unit, and club activities make the school unique among NYC private schools.

I have a PhD in Educational Policy and specialize in secondary school curricula. As an educational administrator for federal government, I've had the pleasure of visiting, analyzing and rating elite schools for the U.S. Dept. of Education. Xavier High School in NYC has consistently outperformed most schools in its class and continues to be an oasis of academic excellence in a vast sea of mediocrity.

I have taught at many elite high schools in NYC: Loyola, Stuyvesant, Queens High School of Science and Xavier. While all of these schools are excellent only Xavier met my definition of an elite academic institution. The school has 150 years of traditions and history - and it clearly shows. Xavier's standards are clearly defined, exacting and comprehensive. The schools athletics and activities - including its vaunted JROTC program - are outstanding. The school's morale and esprit de corps are second to none. The student body is composed of little gentlemen (not boys) with a code of conduct and chivalry that is rarely seen today. When my two sons reach high school age, I will only consider Xavier for their education.

One of the finest High Schools in the country. This school produces results. Just as likely to turn out a CEO, Teacher, Policemen, Doctor or Personality, but one thread across all is they will be some of the best at what ever they do. The gift of a Xavier eduction will pay dividends for the rest of your sons life.

Xavier High School is the 'toughest school you'll ever love.' The work load is demanding but intellectually challenging, the faculty is dedicated and first rate, and the facilities are excellent. The only downside is the new all-natural cafeteria menu -- it leaves much to be desired.

After Regis, Xavier is by far the best Catholic high school in New York City. The school instills students with honor, discipline, academic rigor, intellectual curiosity, morals and ethics. It is an elite institution in a sea of mediocrity. I highly recommend it over many specialized high schools.

Xavier High School is the best Catholic school in New York. The numbers do not lie and their alumni list is like a who's who list of greatness.

While the academic program is great, the administration is substandard. They are not at all supportive and I would highly suggest looking for another high school.

I am currently a sophmore at Xavier, and i doubt that i could possibly be as happy anywhere else. With the help of Xavier, I have met other students from all over the five boroughs and have made many good friends. From the first day of classes, my teachers have been telling me and my friends that which is required to exceed at Xavier; doing your homework. I find that as long as i apply myself and work hard, it is easy to pass here. I would not pass up my Xavier experiencefor anything in the world.

Xavier has been an amazing experience. There is always something to undertake while studying at this institution. If a student goes into this school with an open mind, they will leave well-rounded and ready to tackle any college curriculum and challenge the world throws at them. Classes are rigorous and the inclusion of after-school activities put pressure on the academics. The pressure, however is a good pressure. Only when a student is fully involved in the school will they excell academically.

Highly competitive admission numbers. 1400 students apply for only 250 freshman seats each year. 40-50 of those accepted freshmen will not make it to graduation day. 99.5% of graduates go on to four year colleges and universities. Half of that Xavier graduating class,(about 100 students),will continue their education at a Jesuit,Ivy League or military academy. Student to teacher ratio is 14:1. There are 15 sports and over 50 organizations. 1/3 of the students remain in Xavier's renowned military program and their alumni provide an impressive array of prestigious titles which compensate Xavier's tuition costs to current students. Alumni include, by title, a US Supreme Court Justice, the US Ambassador to the Philippines, the president of the United States Postal service,The president of Annheiser Busch, an NBC News personality,a local FOX News journalist, a New York Times writer, and a boat load of doctors.

All catholic school is not good in academic but good in learning evironment.

Xavier hs is by far the best school in the tri state area.

I am a gradaute of the school. Not a day goes by that Xavier is not present in my life. The teachers are amazing and always there before and after school. As for extracurricular activities, I was involved in over 10 thoughout my high school career. There is something for everyone. Lastly, the parents are highly visible in the school and in the lives of the students.

Xavier High School is one of the top two Catholic high schools for boys in the tri-state area. I don't think that comes as a surprise to anyone in the know. No school offers more on the part of extracurricular activities, discipline and history than Xavier. What further distinguishes Xavier from other schools is the dedication and adoration from their well-established alumni. You will not come across any alumni that contributes, promotes or bleeds more for a school than 'Sons of Xavier.'

Generally an excellent school with a mid to high intellect level faculty. Administration was excellent under jesuit stewardship but has lapsed slightly in the past year. Extracarricular activities are extensive and parent involvment is generally good.

Never have I seen a better instance of a jesuit education in the modern world. The students at Xavier are some of the best I have ever seen.

Xavier has been one of the finest academic institutions for over 150 years. If there was ever an example of how to incorporate the full experience of mind, body, and soul, then Xavier meets the criteria. It is one of the most prestigious high schools in the country.

As an educator myself, I am so appreciative and grateful for the education my two boys received at Xavier. It is truly a top notch school. In regards to the Brooklyn Tech comparison, I would have to say that contrary to the posted belief, Xavier is the much better school. They send a higher percentage to four year colleges, they have a better student/teacher ratio, more activities and programs, and certainly a safer and more structured learning environment. I would know this because I graduated from Brooklyn Tech in '74.

There is nothing like a Xavier education. Not only is a Xavier education better than just about every competing Catholic high school education BY MILES, it is probably also better than the vast majority of college educational opportunities as well. It is one of the best schools in the tri-state area.

this is a good school. I feel that children get the necessary support they need to succeed. But I would still say that Brooklyn Tech is a much better school.

Xavier is an outstanding high school. I would match them against any elite high school. They are definitely the best investment for the dollar. Academically they send over 200 students to top four year colleges and universities each year, an over 99% graduation rate. They also offer more AP courses and additional courses, including militay scince for ROTC students, than any other Catholic high school. They offer over fifteen sports and over fifty organizations. Their music program awarded them the 'Best High School Band' during the St. Patrick's Day review within the past few years. Most importantly, Xavier is 1K cheaper than rival Fordham Prep and 13K cheaper than Loyola, yet Xavier offers so much more than both of them, including Regis when it comes to opportunities.

How great is Xavier? Here are just a fraction of graduates making an impact across America: The president of Anheiser Busch, the president of the United States Postal Service, the president of NBC Networks, the US Supreme Court Justice who appointed our US president ( Antonin Scalia.)How about NBC's Al Roker, FOX News Mike Sheehan, and the US Ambassador to the Philippines, Alberto Del Rosario? This school has an endless list of leaders who haved shaped our country. Students who graduate from Xavier have a tremendous capacity for knowledge, discipline, faith, and service. Xavier exemplifies the best of the best. This school is not for the faint of heart. Only the cream of the crop need apply.

This is the best school ever. it give a great education and is was the best 4 years ever.

Xavier High School is an elite academic institution. This school clearly sets the standard for high academic performance with a brand of 'old school' discipline. Boys do not become graduates here, they become leaders.

Xavier High School is a wonderful academic institution with undeniable results of discipline, class, and tradition. It is arguably one of the top two Catholic high schools in the tri-state area.

The academic program is by far superior to other neighboring schools, however, the administration does not want to deal with children who do something wrong. Their answer to everything is to expel them and leave them in the middle of the year to scramble to find somewhere to go. They are cold-hearted and I would seriously reconsider anyone going here.

Xavier is a very prestigious and rigorous institution. You will not find one Catholic high school in the NYC metropolitan area that sends 99% of students to four year collegs and yet has over 15 sports and 52 organizations, a student to teacher ratio of under 15:1, and a tuition that is still under $8,000. On top of that, Xavier managed to be one of the very few schools that never broke from their original roots of being an all-boy, Jesuit, and military school. With Blue Ribbons honors under their belt and an ROTC program that is recognized under 'honors with distinction', the highest in the country, it has never been a secret how Xavier has been one of the three best Catholic high schools for boys in the NYC metropolitan area for close to 160 years.

Excellent college preparatory school, run in the great Jesuit tradition. In fact, I learned more here than I did in college. Not only did my Xavier education enrich me intellectually, it also taught me to be ethical, tolerant and involved citizen of the world.

Excellent school! United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School for academic excellence and 2003 Blackboard Award for Best Catholic High School in New York City. Many of the school's distinguished faculty have either been graduates of the school itself or educating young men there for over twenty years. The school has a 99% graduation rate going on to four year colleges and universities. The class of 2004 were awarded 16 million dollars in college scholarships. Some of their distinguished graduates include US Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia '53, US Ambassador to the Philippines, Alberto Del Rosario '57, NBC television personality and author, Al Roker '72, author, George Brennan '89, and FOX News New York Investigative Reporter, Mike Sheehan ' 66.

Xavier is a very special commununity with a hundred & fifty year tradition. In keeping with it's mission of educating the middle class & lower middle class, Xavier has kept the tuition costs well below the average in a city with escalating private education costs. The school begins every year at a deficit & the shortfall is supplemented by strong alumni support & some funding from the Jesuit community. Xavier men have a strong sense of who they are when they graduate & find themselves well prepared academically when entering college. The Xavier community showed how tight-knit and yet how far-reaching it is during the unfortunate 9/11 attacks. Xavier lost several 'sons' & relatives and many found solace on 16th street.

Xavier is a great place and I am bothered by the review at the bottom. Fr. Ciancimino has done an excellent job, and his departure will signify the end of an era, but also, the start of another. We are truly going to miss Fr. Ciancimino. Teachers truly care about you at Xavier. Where also would teachers show up at 7 in the morning to help a student prepare for Latin? What about teachers who stay until all hours of the night to work on yearbook. The tradition at Xavier is outstanding, and I have been proud to be part of the Xavier community for the past 3 years. Sons of Xavier, Keep Marching, on to victory! We'll fight for you!

I have to respond to the former students letter. I graduated in 1983. I suffered the loss of my belove father as a sophmore. I struggled with my studies. I could have found myself ejected but instead I did find support. I had to work hard and it made me a better man. Years after I graduated I had problems and went back to Xavier for a support and found it in the same fine people that had made my education so extraordinary. Did I ever have a bad teacher? Yes. Were most of my teachers outstanding and concerned with me as a person and my academics? Definately yes. I teach in a public High School now and if I had a son I would have no hesitation sending them to Xavier. Xavier turns young men into distinguished, well grounded men. It is a proud tradition.

I attended Xavier from 1987 to 1991. It was there that my foundation for life was formed. Despite the fact that I'm 'different' and often don't follow any particular order... Nonetheless Xavier taught me discipline, morals, values, and leadership. It prepared me for university studies, and a great career in the arts. Being an all boys school wasn't difficult. Great friendships were formed, and there was plenty of time for girls later on in life. The military program wasn't for me, but I knew plenty of guys who were happy with the program. The staff was caring, and wonderfully supportive. I still keep in touch with some of them 12 years later. A hard school to stay in though if you're not disciplined enough to make the grades and follow the rules. Out of a class of over 300, only 160 of us actually made it all four years and graduated. But well worth it. Made college studies easy.

The second best academic Jesuit and Catholic high school for boys in Manhattan after Regis. Challenging curriculum with a military makeup. 99% go on to four year colleges. It is a United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School and famous graduates include US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia '53 and television personality Al Roker '72. If you want a school where boys are made men and discipline shares the same plateau as education, this is the school for your son. The school is embodies success.

This school takes pride in telling future students that when you come to Xavier H. S you will enter into the Xavier Community. A tight nit caring environment that watches out for protects and helps their own. Well, let me ask you this would a real community throw out dozens of students every year for poor academic work. Or would they offer help to the students that needed it in order to protect them from the embarrassment and depression that follow not long after being ejected from a school they called home for 3 long years. A school that they grew to love that told them from year to year how they were in a community like no other. That other schools weren't as good as this one, teachers would talk mockingly about students from the surrounding high schools. The same schools the student that was thrown out would have to go to and beg to attend for their final year. Unless you are Irish and Catholic you are not in the community. That should be Xavier High Schools Slogan. All others need not apply. A Headmaster named Father Ciamcamito, that would do nothing to help a student in need. He will only take his pen out of his draw and sign away the students life. Sign away the students future, all in the name of protecting themselves from someone that will ruin their college statistics. I was once a student of Xavier High School I was thrown out in my Junior Year. I later went on to attend a college with many of my old friends from Xavier. So let me ask you why is it that I would have been kicked out of a school for academic reasons and later be in college with many of the same people I was in class with at Xavier. Does that make any sense? They were obviously telling me I wasn't smart enough to finish my last year there but yet I was just as smart as the countless Xavier students that went to my college. Why weren't they kicked out? And if they are so much better than I am why did they go to the same college? Just in case your wondering it is a very good college. Oh and this student that isn't worthy of a Xavier education received an 1150 on his SATs. Ask Father Ciamcamito what really decides what makes a kid stay or go. Ask the Headmaster of this community 'the Xavier community' How many students are thrown out every year for academic reason. I don't think any one should be ejected from a school for academic reasons. They should help the student get through whatever problems he may be having. Don't give up on his and say go elsewhere we can't help you. If you want you child to go to a school that will help him when he is having academic problems or is having trouble grasping something, stay away from this high school. They will only toss the child out onto 16th street along with countless others. Disciplinary problems are completely different if a student is unruly, won't behave himself, and or is being disruptive in class, severe action should be considered. One of the punishments Xavier H. S puts it's students through is JUG. This involves making the student join approximately 10 - 25 others in walking in a circle in the courtyard for 45 minutes to an hour. I recommend they make the student read or do some school work that will expand their minds for 45 minutes to an hour, instead of wasting their time. JUG is given to anyone that is late whether it is 30 seconds or 5 hours. One JUG is given for every tardiness. This has been just one former students oppinion. Please carefully consider all your options before choosing Xavier High School for your child. And please do ask the headmaster why anyone is thrown out of Xavier for academic reasons. Ask him if it is because they give up on the child and or because they don't have good enough teachers to get through to the child.
